Using the Dropbox desktop app means you won't have to manually upload or download files in your Dropbox folder and any time you make a change to a file and are connected to the internet that change will sync everywhere you have Dropbox installed. Dropbox app for Mac works even when you're offline — just like an ordinary folder.
You can open and edit Dropbox files with third-party apps, directly from your Dropbox account. To do so:
- Sign in to dropbox.com or open the Dropbox desktop app.
- Click the name of the file you’d like to open.
- Click Open.
- Click the third-party app you’d like to open the file in.
- Note: The options in the dropdown menu depend on the kind of file you’re trying to open. If you don’t see the app you’d like to open the file in, click Connect apps and follow the prompts to connect an app.
- Once you’ve edited or taken action on the file, save or apply the changes (this step will vary, depending on the application).
The new edited file will be saved alongside your original file, but the edited file name will have additional information about the file's state and provider. For example, if the original file name is 'My Contract.pdf', the new edited file may be titled 'My Contract (signed-AdobeSign).pdf'.

There are two reasons why you may not see the dropdown menu when you click Open:

- The file isn’t saved to your Dropbox account. This happens if someone shared the file with you, but you didn’t save it to your Dropbox account.
- You’re a Dropbox Business user and your admin disabled Extensions.If you’re part of a Dropbox Business team, and your team admin has disabled Extensions for your team, you won’t see the dropdown menu when you click Open.
